Holotropic Breathwork® was developed by Stanislav Grof, M.D. and his late wife Christina as an experiential method for accessing extra-ordinary states of consciousness for personal discovery, healing and transformation. Laying comfortably on a mat each participant uses the power of their own breath along with the loud evocative  music to enter a non-ordinary state of consciousness.  The word "holotropic" is taken from the derivative of the Greek words for "holos" (whole) and "tropic" (moving towards), thus "moving toward wholeness".

Participants work in pairs, alternating roles as "breather" and "sitter". Each person will have one full breathing session (approximately 2.5–3 hours) and one sitting session. Sitters offer quiet, attentive presence while facilitators hold the overall container.

Experiences vary widely. Some people connect with memories or emotions ready for attention. Others experience imagery, physical sensations, or expanded states of awareness. Sessions can feel intense or subtle — there is no “right” way for it to unfold.Strong emotions or body sensations may arise and are supported with care, allowing each participant’s nervous system to move at its own pace.

After the breathing period, participants are invited to create a simple drawing or non-verbal expression to help integrate the experience before closing the day together.

The work isn’t about going somewhere else — it’s about coming home to yourself.

Holotropic Breathwork combines intentional breathing, carefully curated music, and skilled facilitation to support deep inner exploration — always within a consent-based, trauma-aware container.

1. BREATH: Participants lie down comfortably and are guided into a steady, rhythmic breathing pattern. This style of breathing can gently shift awareness and activate the body’s natural capacity for insight and emotional processing. Rather than forcing an outcome, the breath allows your system to move at its own pace. Some experiences feel expansive and intense. Others are subtle and quiet. Both are valid.

2. MUSIC: Music supports the journey by providing an emotional arc. Carefully selected tracks help create space for feelings, memories, imagery, or sensations to arise naturally. Participants are encouraged to stay connected to their bodies and follow what feels resourcing and manageable, rather than pushing beyond their capacity.

3. SAFE, CONSENT-BASED SUPPORT: Trained facilitators hold a grounded, supportive environment throughout the session. Clear agreements are established beforehand. With explicit consent, gentle supportive touch or bodywork may be offered to help release physical tension or support emotional processing. You are always in control of your experience, and you may pause, adjust, or stop at any time.

4. INTEGRATION & NERVOUS SYSTEM CARE: Expanded states can bring insight, emotional release, or awareness of previously held material, but the session doesn’t end when the breathing stops.. Integration helps ensure these are digested in a way that supports long-term wellbeing rather than overwhelm. Afterward, you’ll be invited to create a mandala or journal — a quiet way to give shape to your experience. We’ll close with a share circle, where you’re welcome to speak to what felt meaningful. Sharing is always optional.

In the days that follow, we encourage you to move gently and notice what continues to unfold and will offer online integration sessions and an online group community (on Facebook &/or What'sApp) to support you in grounding the work into your everyday life.

Keep it simple. Take it easy.

In the days before:

  • Reduce stimulants and alcohol
  • Eat lighter & drink more water
  • Clear your schedule where possible
  • Avoid over-researching others’ experiences

The day of:

  • Eat a light, nourishing breakfast
  • Hydrate
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing

Bring:

  • Eye Mask (we love this one)
  • A blanket and pillow
  • Water bottle, chapstick, hair tie
  • Anything that helps you feel physically supported like a boster or meditation cushion
  • Journal & pen
  • Simple lunch - we will have GF snacks, fruit & nuts, and chocolate ;)

There is no perfect way to prepare. Create space, soften your schedule, and come as you are!
